In the past five years, the second hand market for baby gear has expanded to include any and all types of gear from safety gates, clothing, toys and everything in between. Unlike car seats, strollers never expire which means that if you find one that has only been lightly used and is of high quality, it can be a solid investment with a little bit of maintenance. Many charities do not take strollers for liability reasons which means a lot of baby gear that otherwise has a lot of life left, ends up in a landfill.
Before I had my daughter, I’d see women toting their children around in cozy wraps or carriers and I wouldn’t give it a thought. It seemed like a logical mode of transportation. But once I got pregnant, I started hearing the term babywearing thrown around like it was a parenting style or a mindset. “Do you think you’ll be babywearing?” someone would ask.
I have been a vegan for many years now (okay fine, I do cheat for a dessert on rare occasion) and my two children are both vegetarian. People most often ask me, where do you get your protein and how do you ensure you are getting enough iron in your family’s diet? The protein question makes me laugh as the North American diet is chalked full of protein and almost all foods have some amount of protein even if it’s very small. The iron question is a bit harder to answer and having had a bad bleeding issue once due to a botched minor procedure, I do know what it is like to be iron deficient.
As a nutritionist and mom of 2 HUNGRY school age boys, I’m always on the look out for great snacks options. Sure, there are lots of great fresh snacks I feed my kids, like fruits and vegetables, but sometimes my kids want something different. And let’s face it! Sometimes moms need an easy grab-and-go type snack to stash in our purse or backpack that we feel good about feeding our kids AND that WE can enjoy eating too.
When I was two months pregnant, my husband and I took a 20-hour flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia with another couple. This was just the beginning of many other adventures with our now 19-month old. Luckily, our son seems to enjoy travelling as much as we do! Well...except by car.
